Full Growing Instructions (Detailed Guide)
Welcome to the easiest and cleanest way to grow vibrant, nutrient-rich microgreens at home.
With Skye Mountain’s pre-filled coco coir punnets, water-once system, and supportive growing tools, you can grow fresh greens with minimal effort—and professional-level results.
These instructions are designed to guide you step by step, just like I would if I were right there with you. Let’s grow!
Step 1: Prepare the Coco Coir Punnet
- Open your box and remove one pre-filled coco coir punnet.
- Reseal the others with cling film immediately to keep the sterile coir clean and protected from bacteria or mould.
- Place your punnet on the counter or in a tray to catch any spills.
Step 2: Flatten the Surface
During delivery and in transit, the coco coir may have shifted about a little. Using the spare shallow punnet included in your kit:
- Turn it upside down and gently press down on the edges, corners, and centre of the coir to flatten it evenly.
Pay special attention to the outer edges—make sure they are flat, not rounded.
→ Why? Flat edges help stop seeds from rolling into the middle and clumping when you mist them. This gives you a more even and healthy grow.
Step 4: Water the Coco Coir
- Place the coco coir punnet inside a deep punnet from your kit.
- Take the spare shallow punnet and place it upside down again on top of the coco coir and slowly pour approximately 400 ml of water evenly through the holes in the punnet.
- Pour slowly and steadily to prevent displacing the coir.
- Stop pouring as soon as you see water begin to drip into the bottom tray. This means the coir is fully saturated.
- Now, lift out the coco coir punnet, and add water to the bottom tray until it reaches the bottom of the coco coir punnet. This maintains long-term hydration.
- Place the spare shallow punnet to the side.
Step 4: Sow the Seeds
- Open your seed packet and gently sprinkle seeds evenly across the surface.
- Use clean fingers or gloves to distribute them across any bare patches.
- Once evenly spread, use your shallow punnet again to press the seeds firmly into the surface. This helps them anchor and prevents movement during misting.
- Clean the bottom of your pressing punnet if you’re working with different seed types to avoid cross-contamination.
Step 5: Mist the Seeds & Cover
- Mist the seeds gently with a spray bottle. You want them moist and soaked.
- Take a second deep punnet, lightly mist the inside, and place it upside-down on top to act as a humidity dome.
Step 6: Place in the Grow System
- Put the covered punnet on the top shelf of your Skye Mountain grow system.
- Heat Mat (if using):
Plug in the mat and set it via digital control: - Choose a time (e.g., 6–12 hrs overnight).
- Choose a temperature: L03–L05 (21–25°C) is optimal.
Heat is most useful in cooler homes, especially if your space drops below 21°C (70°F) at night.
Step 7: Lighting & Growth
- After a few days, depending on length and growing preferences, remove the top humidity tray.
- Now switch on your LED grow light:
- Timer: 12 hours per day.
- Colour:
- Red light supports early-stage germination.
- White light promotes leafy growth and healthy green colour.
- Brightness: Set to full power for strong, fast growth.
Expert Tip
Because Skye Mountain’s tall top punnets create a deep, enclosed dome, you can leave them on slightly longer than traditional trays.
This mimics a propagation dome, which maintains higher humidity and warmth—ideal conditions that help microgreens germinate faster and more uniformly.
It’s especially useful for tougher seeds like radish or cabbage that benefit from a slightly extended blackout or high-humidity phase.
Care Tips for Growing
Droopy plants?
You have two safe options:
- If they’re severely drooping, you can gently pour a small amount of water directly onto the side of the coco coir punnet. Keep the punnet slightly tilted as you pour so the water flows gently across the surface and doesn’t pool in one place.
- Best option: Add 1–1.5 cm of water to the bottom tray and let the wick and roots drink it up.
Mould issues?
Place your USB fan near the system to increase airflow. Drying out the surface slightly can reduce mould growth.
Harvest time?
Usually between 7–10 days, or when the first true leaves appear and the microgreens are about 5–7 cm tall. Snip above the soil line with clean scissors.
